Prison Island, once a Quarantine Station, is a heaven for rare bird species and Aldabra Giant tortoises, with 27 stunning sea facing beds, a magnificent restoration project done by the owners of these islands in 2006, reclaiming a block of 19th century colonial building and adding other new cottages in the local architecture style. It is surrounded by the pristine waters, just a 20 minute dhow trip from Zanzibar's Stone throw Town. The island of Changuu is about 810 m long and 230 m wide.
The white sandy beaches of Prison Island, the dense forest and the splendour of the graceful dhows fishing at night draws foreigners and frequent tourists that come on excursion alike to Zanzibar year after year.
In this Paradise Island, 3 ½ miles away from the mainland Zanzibar, the management often recommends to their guests to arrive wearing a swimming costume or a bikini; once you have landed on the island, the dream has just begun.
Accommodation at Changuu Private Island Paradise
Prison Island offers two room categories, all in close proximity to the sea.
15 exclusive deluxe cottages are located in the north-west side of the island, discretely distributed along the sea-line, affording maximum privacy and seclusion.
The cottages are built in local materials and topped with traditional thatched roofs, achieving cool atmosphere day and night.
The spacious interiors are elegantly decorated and equipped with mosquito nets and ensuite bathrooms, all with 2 al fresco showers and bathtub.
The private outdoor verandas face out to the sea, maximizing the views and sounds of the Ocean.
In the south-west side of the island, the former Quarantine Area built in 1931 has been converted into 12 elegant air conditioned standard en suite rooms with a sea view which are equally as colorfully decorated as the cottages.
The Fisherman’s Cove Bar serves these rooms for easy access to cold drinks and sundowners. Changuu Island harmoniously combines the display and restoration of the intense history of the islet with modern necessities and facilities. The main building of the island, Prison Ruins, has been restored as it was in the time of its construction, 1893. Its authenticity has been preserved, by adapting it to new uses: the Prison Ruins is now the main cultural area of the island housing the exhibition room displaying the history of the Island and a well-stocked library. Cultural & musical functions will be celebrated here. Leisure facilities in the Prison Ruins include an exclusive boutique, restaurant and bar.
Candlelight dinners in the piazza facing the restored ruins are a romantic experience on the island. A full time generator providing electricity enables guests to spoil themselves with a delicious cappuccino at anytime. The Mathews’ Restaurant is an artfully restored building that was erected in the late 1890s. Named after Sir General Lloyd Mathews, who played an important part in the recent history of Zanzibar, the restaurant features fine International Cuisine. It’ s wide verandah, enjoys invigorating sea breezes and overlooks the irresistible swimming-pool with drinks service from the pool bar.
In this untouched natural paradise on the western side of the island guests can swim in a natural lagoon where Sea Turtles can often be seen. In addition to this, snorkeling and diving in the waters surrounding Changuu will delight visitors with a kaleidoscope of reef fishes.
A floodlit tennis court in the bush offers further sporting possibilities. Guests of the island will enjoy their unforgettable stay side by side with the local inhabitants of the island, the resident community of 100 plus Aldabra Giant Tortoises which settled in Changuu in the 1920s.
