Elephant watch camp

There is now doubt why Elephant Watch Safaris was selected as a world "hot spot" by Conde Nast Traveler and Best Tented Safari by The Week magazine. The Camp is owned as well as managed by the Douglas-Hamilton family who has been privileged to work with elephants for more than thirty years. The books "Among the Elephants," was written by them and an account of their time spent studying elephants in Lake Manyara and "Battle for the Elephants," which documents their years undertaking an Africa wide elephant census to put an end to the slaughter of elephants for the ivory trade. As chairman of "Save the Elephants", a registered charity, Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton was also involved in the recent making of the Discovery Channel IMAX film, "Africa's Elephant Kingdom."

Accommodation at The Elephant watch camp consists of:

Elephant Watch guides meet their guests at either of the two airfields and drive straight to the Reserve where time is spend with the well known elephant families. Situated in the Samburu National Reserve, Elephant Watch Camp is completely private and surrounded by lush vegetation and animals life on the edge of the Ewaso Nyiro River

Five spacious desert tents with en-suite bathrooms, awaits guests, perched on the sand banks and sheltered under the Acacia and big Kigelia tree forest. Accommodation can be provided for ten guests. The rooms are adorned with African splendor and eco friendly furniture. Colorful cotton cloths are draped in the room. The unusual and unique wooden furniture is made from fallen trees and mats are woven locally. Start your day with a cup of rich Kenyan coffee delivered to your tent at any time you choose. Conclude your day with a sundowner at the edge of the world or relax on the huge cushioned sofas at the camp and listen to the night awakening. Local and farm supplied foods are prepared and selections of good wines are available, rounding off a bush feast.

The guides know every elephant in the reserve and the elephants know them allowing you to get very close to them. Daytime visits to the "Save the Elephants" research center and the local Samburu community is also on our agenda. Guests are invited to see the northern species of wildlife and hike bush trails to see some of the 400 bird species in the reserve. Early morning or evening bush walks along well traveled Elephant paths or collecting medicinal plants and honey and always accompanied by our Samburu Warriors. Elephant Watch Safaris is perfect for all ages.
