About Nguruman Escarpment
browse (1 / 3)

Kenya is a land of contrasts that features sweeping savannah plains, snow capped mountains, lush agricultural farmlands and stunning palm tree fringed beaches.

The Nguruman Escarpment is situated in the southern most part of Kenya, approximately 150 kilometres from Nairobi, and forms the western wall of the magnificent Rift Valley. The vegetation varies dramatically from open woodland area to dense thicket on the lower slopes of the escarpment. Bubbling mountain streams flow down the escarpment, and below the countryside is a montage of scrub, forest, and grassland. The mist and dew that lays on the high peaks and forested ridges lends an enchanting mystical feel to the area.

Although there are sections of the escarpment that is privately leased for development of luxury tourism, the indigenous Maasai community own and farm the land on the escarpment and hills. Shompole and Nguruman Group Ranch, set at the foot of the Nguruman Escarpment, are some of the several ranches that have been set up by the cattle herding Maasai community, and cover a section of the Rift Valley between the soda rich lakes of Magadi and Natron. Visitors can spend time to discover and participate in the authentic and traditional lifestyle of the Maasai culture. Several lodges are located in the area which is part owned by the local Maasai people. The region is a haven for over 300 species of bird life, and has a vast array of wildlife such as antelope, cheetah, zebra, lion, leopard, monkey, and giraffe. The pristine habitat of the Nguruman Escarpment is an extraordinary place for visitors to enjoy outdoor activities. There is ample game viewing opportunity, walking, kayaking, mountain bike trails, and gorgeous panoramic vistas that will leave the visitor breathless.

The Nguruman Escarpment is a beautiful diverse and interesting region and is a stunning location to explore the many sights and sounds of Africa.
