Samatian Island Lodge

Samatian Island, named for the Njemps word for the species of fig tree flourishing on the island. Samatian Island Lodge is beautifully set on a privately owned 30-acre island in the Great Rift Valley's Lake Baringo.

The Lodge offers quite extraordinary views of Lake Baringo's bronzed waters given its unique vantage point. Lake Baringo and its surrounds have a beauty all their own; almost mythical are the majestic sunsets and the immense wealth of brightly coloured bird species. Experience the Lakes' Njemps fisherman continue their peoples trade in a fashion unchanged for the last 200 years, framed by the natural wonderment that is the Laikipia escarpment.

Accommodation at The Samatian Island Lodge consists of:

The accommodation at Samatian Island is comprised of 5 spacious open-plan thatched chalets accommodating up to 12 guests. The rooms each have the most extraordinary views of Lake Baringo. All chalets have bathrooms adjacent to them. The family chalet, with double and twin bedrooms, has an upstairs deck for brilliant observations of the Kenyan cosmos and an unobstructed full-circle view. The capacious rooms are welcomingly airy whilst mosquito netting above the beds provide protection during the night. There is also a magnificent large infinity pool, next to which there is a dining hall. The infinity pool has spectacular views of the beautifully harsh environment in which Samatian finds itself.

There is a great deal to do and see at the ornithological paradise of Samatian Island in Lake Baringo. Enjoy enchanting boat rides to view the vastness of the lake and meet its wonderful inhabitants, like the hippo, crocodile, any one of the 450 species of birds, perhaps be daring and feed fish eagles, or visit the smoldering pools and hot springs.

Travel further out to the Lake Bogoria where you can be truly dazzled by the immensity of life by watching flocks of flamingo feeding on this soda lake. Get to know the interesting tribes men and woman of the Pokot and Njemps tribes, or simply discover some of the more rare mammalian animals found in the area, like the Greater Kudu.
