About Kisumu
browse (1 / 4)

This pleasant, sleepy town on the shores of Lake Victoria is the main town in the Western Highlands of Kenya. Lake Victoria is the largest of all African Lakes, and also the second widest freshwater body in the world. The lake’s shores are highly indented, and there are many isles in the lake, some of which, especially the Sesse Group, are known for their beautiful landscape, health resorts and sightseeing places.

Kisumu is Kenya's third largest city and is the centre of western Kenya. Kisumu literally means a place of barter trade "sumo". Attractions in the city include Kibuye Market, the Kisumu Museum, an impala sanctuary, a bird sanctuary, Hippo Point, and the nearby Kit Mikaye and Ndere Island National Park.

Visitors to the City of Kisumu can choose from a wide range of accommodations suitable for any budget. Kisumu is also popular for Fish (Tilpia) eating along the lake. The people are friendly and the impala park also offers a good attraction site. Kisumu is also famous for its benga music and vibrant cultures.

The Kisumu Museum has a variety of interesting animal exhibits, including a stuffed lion pouncing on an equally stuffed Wildebeest. The museum's most important and largest exhibition is the UNESCO-sponsored Ber-gi-dala. This is a full-scale recreation of a traditional Luo homestead. There are ethnographic exhibits and a display of musical instruments. The aquarium isn't worth much but the snake house offers a fairly complete collection of the local slithering life.

Not far from Kisumu is Hippo Point, but it apparently is not what it used to be except for the beautiful sunsets. Boat rides on Lake Victoria are fun and widely available, and visitors can either find one themselves at a negotiable price or can go through one of the hotels. Kisumu is a town full of life and activity and a visit will be a guaranteed memorable experience.
