Eldoret / general information
Eldoret is situated in western Kenya on the Uasin Gishu Plateau west of the Great Rift Valley. The Rift Valley is characterized by arid and fertile farmland, flat parched plains and steep ridges. There are over thirty active and non-active volcanoes as well as countless hot springs along the Rift’s length. The many lakes attract several species of fish, and a multitude of birds gather here to feast on the abundant food supply. This beautiful city of Eldoret stretches over the surrounding highlands of northwest Kenya, and is primarily an agricultural community. Beyond the cities’ limits the landscape paints a lovely picture with rows of corn and wheat fields and cattle lazing and grazing in the green pastures. The city has a number of factories which manufactures textiles as a trade. In Kenyatta Street in Eldoret, the Dorino Lessos Creameries Cheese factory is located, and produces over 30 different types of cheese. Visitors are welcome to taste a variety of these delectable cheeses, and clean their palates with some delicious yoghurts and ice-creams, also produced at the factory. Eldoret was originally known as “64”, as it was 64 miles from the then newly built Uganda Railway railhead at Kibigori. The bustling inner city of Eldoret is home to Moi University, as well as Moi Teaching and Refferal Hospital, and Eldoret International Airport. Moi University is an advanced institution leading the way in science, teaching, research, development and technology. The high altitude of Eldoret is an ideal training ground for many world famous athletes such as Olympic gold medallist Kipchoge Keino. Although Eldoret is not a tourist attraction in itself, it is rich in history, have leading teaching institutions, a lovely vibrant city for a stopover as tourist make their way to explore the wonderful diversity Kenya has to offer.
