The Mater Dettol Heart Run is a run that raises money for a fund that helps children with cardiac problems to get the surgery that they need in order to survive. A large number of Kenya's children suffer from cardiac problems that often require open-heart surgery. While this surgery is available in Kenya, it is often too expensive for Kenya's poor to afford, meaning that lives are lost where they should be saved. The Mater Dettol Heart Run raises funds for children in need of this type of surgery, and gives participants a welcome chance to donate to the future of Kenya, while enjoying the challenge of the run. It happens every year at the Mater hospital in Dunga Road, in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Mater Hospital partners with various corporate sponsors annually to organize The Mater Dettol Heart Run. Supporters often exceed 10,000: throngs of people gather to support this worthy cause, with about 600 runners taking part every year. Cheery support can be expected from the athletics-loving friendly people of Kenya as you wind your way through the charming streets of Nairobi. School children, corporate teams, individuals and even Catholic Archbishop Ndingi Mwana 'a Nzeki the Vice President, Hon. Moody Awori were among those that turned up to raise support for the cause in 2006. Since 2006, 30 children in desperate need of heart surgery have benefited from The Mater Dettol Heart Run. The run is accompanied by festivities on the mater Hospital lawns. The event is a great corporate event, whether for team-building, or seriously contesting the corporate event, or just having some fun. Individual participation, whether by holidaying businessmen, vacationers or any individual at all is a great way to have some fun and take the day off for a worthy cause.
