Bird Watching in Rusinga Island
browse (1 / 8)

Rusinga Island is situated on the northeastern end of Lake Victoria some 80 miles west of the Maasai Mara.

For birdwatchers, Kenyan west is one of the richest region, with twin islands of about an hour’s boat ride from the village, there are more than 150 different bird species that have been recorded as per April 2002.

Even though many of the birds are brightly coloured and exotic looking, they are easy to identify and master; infact within a day or two you will be able to identify various species easily. The main habitats for the birds include open plains, water farmlands and woodlands.

The most common colourful bird is the Malachite kingfisher, also on or near the water you will find bright flamingos, hammerkops, plovers, and many others.
