

Aberdare National Park is situated 180 kilometres from Nairobi in Kenya, and stretches over a range of diverse environment. The park features two airstrips at Mweiga and Nyeri.
The Aberdare National Park is part of the Aberdare Mountain Range and was established in 1950 with the main objective being to protect and preserve the forests and moors of the region. The park has beautiful and diverse landscapes that range from majestic mountain peaks soaring high above sea level, valleys with crisscrossing streams, bamboo and rain forests, waterfalls, and moor land. Some of the forests and undergrowth lies at a lower altitude in the Salient area near Nyeri. The indigenous foggy rain forests, cascading mountains streams and waterfalls lend a mystical and enchanting atmosphere to the area.
The Ark is a favourable site to catch a glimpse through the thick vegetation of the beautiful elusive bongo antelope. Night time game viewing in the Salient area of the park presents wonderful opportunity to encounter elephants, buffalo and lions which is attracted by the waterholes and salty spots. For safety reasons camping sites are limited and restricted in the area. The Reedbuck public camp site is in the moor lands and provides visitors with fresh water, firewood, toilet facilities, and shelter from rain. Visitors are requested to bring their own food supplies. Several splendid picnic areas are located in the area.
Aberdare National Park has a spectacular array of wildlife, and the lush forests sustain many species such as elephant, buffalo, lions, monkeys, warthog, as well as antelope, bushbuck and eland. There is a healthy number of black rhino present within the protected boundaries of the park. For the bird watcher there are an incredible variety of species and includes eagles, sunbirds, sparrow hawks, and plovers. Indigenous plant life includes varieties of huge lobelia, heather, and groundsel. Visitors can also participate in walking, fishing for trout in the rivers, camping, and picnicking.
